Have you ever felt really angry or hurt about something and then noticed you were taking out your anger on everyone and everything around you even if they did nothing to cause the anger? Have you felt uncontrollable sadness or heartache?
Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”
I hadn’t heard this scripture until I was an adult. I do believe my parents wanted to protect me from heart ache. I understand now that if my heart is pained, I can also cause pain to other people. It’s a domino effect.
I feel empathy towards others who are in pain. It hurts me to see other people hurting. Even those who could be seen as ‘enemies’, I have felt empathy towards. When I see someone crying and venting, I put myself in their shoes and ponder, “if I were going through that situation, how would it make me feel”.
When we get hurt on a part of our body, we go to the doctor to be healed. In the same way our physical bodies can be healed, we can go to God the Father and be healed by Him too. In the scripture from Psalm listed above that talks about the heart, this is talking about the spiritual heart. Our ability to love God and others comes from this heart.
When we’ve been harmed emotionally, it can go deep down, to our spiritual heart. But often we try to heal our heart with physical things such as alcohol, food, relationships, sex, entertainment, work, pride, money, etc. I learned awhile back that these physical things are very temporary and actually can cause more physical harm.
God is 3 in one, Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit. He loves us as a father should, saves us through Jesus and sends his Holy Spirit to guide us on Earth. When we acknowledge that we have a heavenly Father God, accept that Jesus died for our sins and accept his Holy Spirit, this will heal us spiritually.
I’m not saying that once we are spiritually saved, we will not struggle. The Bible states in John 16:33, “I (Jesus) have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Since I have accepted Jesus and continued to grow in faith, this has helped me to endure and overcome struggles. It has given me spiritually healing. When my heart is hurting, I go to God’s Word and to Him in prayer for healing. I also reach out to Christian friends to find comfort and accountability.
